What design related things are you guys doing over the summer?? Gonna get up close and personal to your chosen subject?? Visiting any museums?? Remember, this is your chosen specialism, you chose to do it, so shouldn’t you be doing something related to it over the summer?? Discuss! Karl

Here’s a question I’m keen to get you’re views on. How many of our first and second years are interested and passionate about product design and how many are just bubbling along on the bottom of the fish tank and just doing enough to pass??

Im going to be working at 2 secondary schools back in Cornwall over the next 12 months, im hoping to be studying a PGCE in Sept 08, so getting some experience at 2 contrasting schools. My plan is to one day be haed of A level DT and get the kids into product design!

Not sure if im taking a safe bet (i got a feeling terry thinks i am!) but it appeals to me.

What do u think Karl? Am i making a mistake??!

  karlhurn (11:25:02) :

Hi Steve, its not just a safe bet if its what you want to do. Getting some experience in a school is a good idea, as it is looked on favourably when you apply for your PGCE.

My advice is, if its what you want to do, then go for it, its a good career, but teaching in schools is hard work.

I am passionate about design, but I often struggle with inspiration, and I still have absolutely no idea what I want to do with my degree once I graduate.

Can anyone recomend some good places to go, websites to visit, or things to look at, other than the obvious coroflot/core 77, and design museum in london?

Im fed up of just drifting along not knowing where I’m going and Id like to concentrate on what I want to do and know what I’m working towards…. As much as I’d like working in a bike shop for the rest of my life, it doesnt pay that well

My best advice is do something you believe in Ben…. Do not wait for something to come to you, go out and get it for yourself! If Design is what you want to do then ask yourself, what area of work within the industry?? There are plenty of agencies out there to help us graduates so start surfing…. Best of luck

Hi Ben,

Interesting comments, but don’t write off the sites I’ve told you just because I told you them, how long have you actually spent looking through core77??

I just had a look at one of the threads on there that might help, its called “If I knew then what I know now” and its a blog by Designers emparting there experience about their time at Uni, you might find it useful:- http://boards.core77.com/viewtopic.php?t=1543

One of them says you have to live it to be good at it, then it doesn’t seem like work, I’ve been saying that all along. Karl

  Lez (01:25:39) :

hey guys!

this is mainly in response to karls question about our interest in product design. i am very very passionate about design, i have always had an interest in it, and since i was little have always been reading, looking into, and designing things. i didnt really take it seriously and decide it was what i wanted to do in life until a level design tech.

i want more than anything to become an industrial designer, and i try to work hard, my main problem is confidence, mainly wondering constantly if my work is good enough.

in response to summer stuff, apart from working, i was hoping to look into going to a few places like museums and stuff, not sure where yet, and trying to come up with some ideas for final year, and start work for that mainly.

Ben,

If you don’t know what to do after you graduate take a look at: http://www.ktponline.org.uk/

There are loads of two year contracts available in all kinds of industries. It really is a fantastic scheme to kick start your career. Most contracts pay fairly well and you have the opportunity to get an NVQ level 4 in management and a MA degree for free!

I am aware of a very exciting KTP project involving product design based with the University of Wolverhampton coming up for interview in the next few weeks. When I get the details I will hopefully be able to blog everyone or I’ll get intouch with Terry.

  Helen (11:44:00) :

Recent Graduates,

I’ve emailed Terry details of a ktp design job at Fairfield display and lighting in Shrewsbury.

Closing Date: Friday 3rd August 2007

If you get / got a 2:1 or 1st take a look - these projects really are worth doing!

Good luck!

Does anyone know of any undergraduate placement oportunities within a 2 hour commute of derby? Im still looking after being let down by a couple of companies. Im getting really desperate.

Dont worry Karl and Terry, Iv still been spending time on my final year project and dissertation.

I really want a placement though as I know how much the experience, money I will have saved, and contacts I will have made will help me in my final year. I want to do as well as possible in my final year because at the end of the day its my career and the rest of my life.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent free download HDR (High Dynamic Range) or HDRI web site? Has anyone had any experience of these in max and could they recommend any ‘free’ maps in particular that are good for metallic or glass objects?

Could do with a few alternatives for my rendering environment light source.

Thanks in advance,

Helen

hi guys i was wondering if any of you do any form of designing for others at the university. I;m currently studying a B.Ed but i have had an idea for ages but never really acted upon it.

I’d love to see my idea have some form of either digital of physical format and have some constructive feedback, into flaws or improvements.

If any one would br iinterested in this, please reply via this blog.

Kind regards
dave
