Inspired
Here I’ll be posting up images of interesting stuff that inspires me from the world of design, and hopefully stuff that inspires you too. So why not send me images of design stuff that floats your boat and I’ll post it up. It could be from the web, something snapped on your mobile, or another students work you’ve seen, its up to you. Send images to k.m.hurn@derby.ac.uk along with a short bit of text that tells us why you find it so inspiring.
Lauched today (9th June 2008) in the UK, the Flip video camera (www.theflip.com) has already taken America by storm.
60 minutes of shooting, 2GB internal memory, 640 x 480 video and a built in USB flip out ideal for uploading video to youtube. For under £100!
Morgan are doing some great concept work at the moment in the area of Hybrids, and producing some interesting designs that mix up classical style with a futuristic 1984 meets Brazil type look. I never thought I’d say this, but I quite fancy a Morgan!

Indian car company Tata have announced the worlds cheapest car. At around £1400 is this a brilliant piece of minimal cost saving design that will mobilise a nation? Or an enviromental disaster that will destory the planet? You decide.
Ford have introduced a ‘Bullit’ special edition Mustang. Great for a spin around the Golden Gate, wouldn’t look so good on Ashbourne Road though.
The Tesla, based on the Lotus Elise is an electric car built in the USA. All the performance of an Elise with zero emissions, no road tax and no conjestion charge! How cool is that! Up yours Ken Livingstone!
Love this idea from Jonathan Aspinall, a UK based designer. The Link Mugs allow you to carry more than your fair share of cuppers!!
The Cima Ladder is a great little idea for a one piece ladder by Mahler & Papadogiannis based in Spain, like it!
I Love some of this flowery graphics that are around at the moment, the multi layered flash animation type look really looks fresh and exciting, it would be nice to get a bit more of this into product design presentation to get us away from the masculine look that dogs most product design presentation.
Great bit of furniture design that sticks in my memory by a Nottingham Trent student at New Designers last year. The great thing about this as a student project is that you instantly get it, and its innovative and clever.
An old favourite of mine, a bit obvious I know, but lets face it, its bloody great isn’t it.
Wow, the Minority Report style PC is here!
Nice Promo Animation for the Sinclair A-Bike
Do they put something in the water in Coventry to make them this good???
Come on Coventry, give the rest of us a chance!
The new Fiat 500, lovely bit of design, even if you are cynical about retro design. I just hope they give them their own show rooms and don’t put them in with the other Fiat tat.
Beautiful design detailing, nice and simple. Has anyone seen the new new Mini interior, I think its gone a bit too far.
Great design for a rotating strip clock, moves the face, not the hands.
Second design for rotatary clock, inspired!
Cheeky book shelves, running and falling man.
Insect inspired garden light.
Modern on the outer edges, traditional on the inside, nice.
OK, its not very sexy and the Industrial Design could do with a bit of work, but this
is exactly the kind of innovative, “oh my god, why didn’t I think of that” idea that
could get you noticed and win you a prize at New Designers. As Steve Bishop mentioned
to me, he saw this idea at this years Nottingham Trent show, too bad a company in the
states already makes them!
The coolest piece of Product/Industrial Design for the movie world?? Discuss.
I love this building in Prague by Frank Gehry called the Dancing House.
Its got lots of lovely playful details. For example, regulations state in
prague that a build can have no more then six stories of windows, Gehry
wanted seven floors with windows, so he oversized them so they serve
more than one floor, genius!
Even though the CD is a bit retro these days, this BeoSound 9000 is still a beautiful
piece of design. Quality materials, lovely interplay of textures and surface finishes.
I wish I designed it.
The WallyPower 118, the stealth bomber of power yachts, what can I
say except, I want one. And yes I know it was on that film The Island!
Check out its beautiful minimal detailing at www.wally.com (crap name, great boat)

that surface computer is amazing!!
Hi Steve,
Yeah, its unreal isn’t it. I didn’t think we’d have Minority Report style computers this soon!
Karl
hey karl,
i went to see the notts trent show on sat and to be honest wasnt very impressed with their product design section, there were a couple of gems but on the whole was pretty ordinary, and i tell u what, they are miles behind derby with their presentation boards (posters!!!). Considering they claim to use max, their renders are pretty terrible.
The furniture deisgn on the other hand blew me away, some awesome pieces, cant believe my camera refused to work, did u get to see any of it karl??
Steve
Hi Steve,
Its good to hear that we’re ahead on presentation, but they walked away with about six New Designers prizes last year so they’re strong on ideas and innovation.
I didn’t get to see the show, but I’m sure they’ll be strong for New Designers. But so will we!
Karl
The sink over toilet was first used in American prisons amazing idea can’t seem to find one though which is a great shame as it’s one hell of a space saver and eco-friendly to boot.
