This year, Product Design again exhibited at the New Designers Exhibition at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London from the 10th till the 13th July 2008. Below are a collection of photos from the show of our stand.

Last Years Show 2007
Last years six students were Matt Mahoney, John Stockwell, Nina Fowler, Zeyad Ahmad, Paul Smith and Steve Bishop. Congratulations to them for winning the chance to go at last years Degree Show.
Product Design has been exhibiting at the show since 2003 with great success. Tell us your views on this, the stand, the past students work and anything else you want to say about Derby at the New Designers.

How we thought it was going to look in 2007!??
We had the same space at the Business Design Centre in 2007, and here’s how we thought the stand could look before we went! Did we pull it off? Compare and contrast to last years if you will!
We had brand new plinths for the year also, which had a shelf/recess for business cards etc. We also had Portfolio stands as last year.

New Designers, worth going or not????
Defiantly worth going, an opportunity that can’t be missed!!!!
Is there some sort of organised transport to get down to new designers? or does anyone fancy volunteering?, if enough people want to go that is (aimed mainly at 2nd year), they could make some money if everyone chips in. And is there a best day to go and not to go?(3rd years and Karl)!!!
I think any product designer should aim to get their work at the new designers. Im putting all my efforts into making sure i have a chance!! (even if my board painting skills are quite up to scratch hey karl!!!)
There’s only organised transport for the student projects that will be going, not the students. If you want to get together and organise a trip to the show, that would be great. Thursday, Friday or Saturday are probably the best days to go. I might even be able to get some free tickets. Karl
I’ve geared myself up for New Designers since I started the first year in tree huggy design! It’s very stressful but it’ll be worth it. How cool would it be for our work to be seen by the likes of SeymourPowell, James Dyson, et al.
I’ve been down the last two years and have been blown away by the talent from other uni’s. But we also have a pocket of talent that can be ranked amongst them. This year is a swan song for some courses and I for one want to be part of that.
Oh yeh, definately worth it…
Anyone got any good ideas about flooring for our stand at that new designers??? Apart from you Mr Stockwell!! Only joking!
I have many ideas Karl about the flooring and stand itself but I think they would be wasted on you…. only joking!! ask nicely and I might tell you…
didnt Mo say he could get you some flooring for free? Think it got brought up at the New Designers meeting

I’ll let you know about the tickets as soon as I know how New Designers will be dishing them out.
The third years are now cracking on, a bit late but then, nothing changes. Not sure who’s going yet, I’ve got some ideas, but people always surprise us on the day with the quality of work they turn out. We’ve taken people to New Designers in the past that we would have never bet on to take, so we’ll see what happens! Karl

went to see the final show, was impressed with the work if not all the ideas so much, couldnt find any graphic design work! whats the story behind that? was generally impressed and cant wait to go and see new designers, thats definately my aim for next year to make it to the new designers exhibit! good luck everyone and hopefully ill see you there! davs
went to the MA degree show for nottingham trent on friday and even tho it was free, it wasnt worth the petrol it cost to get there, massive dissapointment.
Much of the work was not a good standard and looked like bad to average stage one work… you would have wet yourself if ud seen the posters Karl
On a lighter note tho, the degree show was fantastic! Lots of good and a few bad examples of design, with Derby standing out with the best. The whole show was very inspiring :D
Look out, i’m back!! Just wanna say a big thanks to everyone that helped towards new designers 2007. It was generally a positive experience and we had some banter along the way. Though I would say to anyone who goes next year, dont leave Karl alone with your model as it is likely to have flown across the stand and smashed into a thousand pieces for when you return!! Ask him, he will tell you the story….. lol (..u will get students finally coming to see you karl, clever hey)
