Egg Drop Challenge 2008! First Year Success!
Here are some photos of this weeks Egg Drop Challenge that the first years have been working on this week. The challenge was to transport an egg from the first floor fire escape at the back of the workshop, 5 metres along a rope and drop 1.2 metres to the ground without braking!
There were some great solutions, some that worked after a few attempts…..
and some that worked straight out of the box….
Well done to team Jade who’s design was the most successful…
very Da Vinci inspired!
Everyone had a good crack at it! Sorry about the punn!
with lots of different solutions…
no-one cracked under the pressure…
Except some of the eggs!!
Well done again to team Jade, and well done to everyone who took part, eggcellent work, oh dear, there I go again.
Exchange Student Anna Maresova is Excelling at Derby Product Design!
Czech exchange student Anna Maresova has had a great few months at the University of Derby Product Design. She has created concepts for lamps, chairs, rowing machines, kitchen equipment, a telephone and even created her own website (www.annamaresova.com)
She’s enjoyed the whole experience so much that she’s hoping to come back as a full time student at Derby in September 2008!
Anna and her “Mushroom Chair” concept
Anna has a real passion for all things design and has been an excellent outside influence for both are current students and staff. We look forward to seeing you in September Anna!
Student’s Website for Product Design Project Submission
“Team Phone”, who created an innovative value added design based on the cheapest telephone in the BT range also created a website for the phone to show its development.

Will the Third Years Raise Their Game with the Degree Show Looming?
With the Degree Show fast approaching, and the second years snapping at their heals with regard to the standard of work, can the third years raise their game in time? We will see. If this wheel chair visualisation below is anything to go by, we might just be ok.
God is in the Details
Mies Van Der Rohe famously said that “God is in the details”, and I’m pretty sure he knew what he way talking about, so our second year students have been focussing on the details for there reverse engineering project. The brief was to take an existing product and redesign it to add value in either form, function, or both.
One example is the Rusell Hobbs Kettle shown below, I’m sure you’ll agree that its pretty detailed, doesn’t look too bad either. Well done guys.
Please feel free to post comments on the work below.

I like the form of the trailer Paul, the design also sounds like a great idea. Brilliant for camping trips with a flat mobile and ipod!!
some sweet stuff there, guessing thats what we have to live up to next year then. is that a render on matts? or is it his model, i cant tell the difference!!!!
Matt’s is a rendering, he’s set the bar nice and high for you guys!!
Thanks for the comment stuart. The trailer’s wheel splits into a vertical axis windturbine and inside is a removable solar panel, providing 24/7 power…er providing its windy and sunny!!
Blame karl for making me redo the bloody thing 50 squillion times. okay 5 times!
So I’ve had Matt and Paul at my door every five minutes to help work out what makes a good poster for the degree show, but where are the rest of you????
Come on, I need to see some posters, look alive people!!!
All lookin really good. Light background, strong visual with hint of colour, good shadow etc. Remindsme of some advice i got once……
Thanks Gristy, I’m sure all my advice about shadows and strong visuals came in handy for teaching English in China!!! Hope you’re having a top time though! Karl
Karl’s comment on posters goes for models too, I’ve seen too few of you and time’s running out! Please make a point of talking to me next week. Any previous students will tell you it’s always too late to start!
PLEASE LISTEN TO TERRY AND KARL. Terry will forget more than you all know….so please do as they say…..nuff said!
Hi
Great book. I just want to say what a fantastic thing you are doing! Good luck!
G’night

Hi Vimal,

Regards
Karl
Is there anyway you could drag my tutors into the 21st century (Crafts)
and get themselves a blog site.
I’d even settle for the late 19th century as a start.
What software is used for the renders?
Also, I’d like to see an animation or at least get an description of the action of Gemma Maddocks’ baby crib, as well as some idea how far the babies are flung.
Ahhhhhh the good old drop the egg challenge. That takes me back. Hung over and playing with eggs, what better way to start uni life.
